Skylarâs blood went cold, and her first reaction was to recoil.
What on earth?
The manâs features twisted into a menacing scowl, and his loud voice assaulted her eardrums. With his shoulders bunched and his hands fisted, he widened his stance, and fury emanated from him in waves. âWhat did you do with my dad?â
What did he expect? Her to produce his father out of her pocket?
Breeze barked in the car, demanding to be let out to defend them, but Skylar hesitated. The guyâd be the type to sue if Breeze bit him. Skylar raised her chin. Sheâd had years of practice reining in her emotions and learned to exude confidence. The latter helped her land new clients.
âGood afternoon, sir.â She stepped in front of her grandmother, shielding her. Skylar kept her voice even and her posture assertive but non threatening. âYouâre Mr. Laneâs son, I presume?â
âThatâs him,â Grandma said behind Skylarâs back.
âDonât you dare talk to them like that!â Dallas was already rushing to her, and it gave her a pleasant jolt.
No matter how many times she kept ruining things between them, even smashing to dust the small crumbs of friendship, here he wasâoffering her his help again. Joy warred with guilt, though. Sheâd kept feeding guilt again and again while starving joy.
Okay, it wasnât about her right now.
She eased her purse containing her gun closer and drew a deep breath of fresh air now tainted with an unwelcome addition of the guyâs expensive cologne and fury. Sheâd dealt with difficult clients and managed to maintain her cool. And the last thing she needed was to get Dallas into a fistfight again. This could escalate.
Breeze kept barking in the car, prompting Skylar to say, âItâs okay, Breeze. Quiet, please.â
âIâm Skylar Rafferty, Dolores Raffertyâs granddaughter.â She offered her hand to the guy, keeping her grandmother tucked behind her, which wouldnât last for long. Whatever spunk she used to have, sheâd gotten from her grandmother. âI canât say itâs a pleasure to meet you, but it appears we have a common problem. So why donât we join forces?â
The man startled and appeared to apply the brakes like Breeze when she rounded a corner too fast. âExcuse me?â
Dallas shielded her, his hands fisted. âYouâre trespassing!â
She didnât need to be shielded, at least not from this visitor, but it gave her a surge of gratitude nonetheless.
The man shifted back. âI have the right to be here. My dad was fine until he met thatââ
She cocked her head, her hands sliding to her hips. âThat wonderful, amazing Dolores Rafferty, you mean?â
Dallas growled. Breeze echoed that growl in the car and scratched at the window, her claws scraping against the glass.
âAnd that wonderful, amazing Dolores Rafferty invites you all for some tea. I still have some pastries, too,â Grandma said, as much of an awesome human being as always.
Dallasâs eyes narrowed. âOr we just call the police if you donât leave.â
The man gaped at him, then deflated. âIâm Grant Lane, and yes, Iâm Earl Laneâs son.â He shook Skylarâs hand and to her surprise held it longer than sheâd expected.
